At least 11 people were killed and more than a dozen injured as Russia launched a large missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight into Tuesday. The assault marked the sixth consecutive day of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
Residential buildings and infrastructure hit
Emergency services reported fatalities in several districts of Kyiv and in communities outside the capital. Three children were among those injured, while residential buildings, businesses, vehicles and infrastructure facilities were damaged.
Emergency workers evacuated 48 people and rescued residents trapped beneath rubble. The casualty figures remained provisional, with Ukrainian media later reporting that the death toll may have reached 12.
The Odesa region was also targeted. Damage to infrastructure near the Orlivka crossing temporarily stopped traffic between Ukraine and Romania.
Faster drones strain air defences
Ukraine’s air force said Russia used ballistic, cruise and anti-radar missiles together with 218 drones and decoys. Approximately one-third of the drones were reported to be jet-powered models capable of flying substantially faster than the propeller-driven Shahed drones used earlier in the war.
Ukraine said its defences intercepted or otherwise neutralised 199 aerial threats. However, strikes were recorded at 28 locations.
The growing use of faster drones presents a new challenge for Ukraine. They reduce the time available for detection and interception while forcing air-defence units to remain active for prolonged periods.
Diplomacy continues without a breakthrough
The attacks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed a possible visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The proposed visit is intended to support continuing efforts to find a negotiated end to the war.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict for the sake of humanity.
Despite renewed diplomatic activity, the sustained attacks demonstrate that military pressure is continuing. For Kyiv’s residents, repeated air-raid warnings and increasingly advanced drones are creating constant disruption and testing the country’s limited air-defence resources.
