US President Donald Trump has threatened further military action against Iran after the two countries exchanged direct attacks for the first time in a month. The renewed fighting has increased concern about shipping and energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
US attacks Iranian launchers
US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, which lies inside the strategically important strait. Washington said surveillance had shown that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel were preparing to deploy new sea mines.
Iran said three soldiers were killed and two civilians injured in the attack. The Revolutionary Guard also claimed that its air defences shot down an American MQ-9 drone over the strait.
The United States described its operation as limited and intended to protect international shipping. Iran called the strike an act of aggression and promised retaliation.
Iran targets US bases
Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles towards the US-operated King Hussein and al-Azraq airbases in Jordan. Tehran claimed that the attacks caused heavy damage.
US and Jordanian authorities said the missiles were intercepted and caused no significant impact. The United Arab Emirates separately reported intercepting an Iranian drone over its territorial waters.
Trump subsequently warned that the United States would respond forcefully if Iran continued its attacks.
Hormuz remains the central risk
The Strait of Hormuz carried approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies before the conflict began in February. Shipping volumes remain substantially below normal, despite Washington’s claim that international routes have been cleared of mines.
A tanker leaving the strait was also struck by three unidentified projectiles. No casualties or environmental damage were reported.
Brent crude rose above $91 per barrel as markets reacted to the renewed fighting and the risk of further disruption to Gulf energy infrastructure.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said continued war was not in his country’s interest and indicated that Tehran remained open to a mediated agreement. However, the latest exchange demonstrates how quickly limited military action can undermine diplomatic efforts and increase economic pressure across the region.
