Turkmenistan has begun repairing some of the world’s largest methane leaks after satellite monitoring exposed extensive emissions from the country’s ageing oil and gas infrastructure. Eight major leaks have now been stopped, marking an important step in efforts to reduce a powerful contributor to global warming.
Eight major leaks repaired
The repairs involved corroded pipelines, damaged gas wells and malfunctioning flares. Turkmenistan was previously identified as one of the world’s largest sources of methane mega-leaks.
The United Nations Methane Alert and Response System, known as MARS, sent 192 notifications to Turkmenistan during the past year. Authorities responded to approximately 20 per cent of the warnings with information about the sources and possible corrective action.
Three of the six largest methane leaks detected globally during the latest six-month period were in Turkmenistan. Nine sources in the country were included among the world’s 50 largest satellite-detected methane emissions.
Methane accelerates global warming
Methane remains in the atmosphere for less time than carbon dioxide but traps considerably more heat. It is responsible for approximately one-quarter of current global warming.
Stopping methane leaks can therefore produce relatively rapid climate benefits. Many industrial emissions result from damaged valves, pipelines or flaring equipment that can be repaired without closing an entire production facility.
Satellites create greater accountability
MARS combines information from more than 30 satellite instruments with artificial intelligence and scientific analysis. When a major emission is confirmed, the system informs the responsible government or company and continues monitoring the location.
Turkmenistan possesses some of the world’s largest natural-gas reserves and is an important supplier to China. Its decision to begin responding demonstrates how satellite transparency can turn previously invisible pollution into measurable public information.
However, numerous major emission sources remain. The completed repairs represent genuine progress, but continued monitoring, investment and international cooperation will be necessary to produce a substantial reduction in the country’s total methane emissions.
