China moves to weaken yuan as central bank intervenes to protect economic stability

China’s economy wakes up to stronger industrial profits but mounting pressure on financial markets

China’s central bank has introduced new measures to slow the appreciation of the yuan, raising foreign-exchange reserve requirements for financial institutions as Beijing attempts to balance currency stability with slowing economic growth. The decision, announced on 3 November, represents one of the strongest interventions in recent months and comes amid concerns that a strengthening currency could undermine Chinese exports and place additional pressure on the world’s second-largest economy.

Central bank raises reserve requirements

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced that the foreign-exchange reserve requirement ratio for financial institutions would increase from 4% to 6%, effective 15 November 2026.

The adjustment is expected to withdraw approximately $24 billion in foreign-currency liquidity from the banking system.

By requiring banks to hold more foreign currency in reserve, policymakers are attempting to moderate the yuan’s appreciation against the US dollar.

Following the announcement, the onshore yuan weakened by as much as 0.37%, reaching approximately 6.6728 per dollar.

Export competitiveness remains a priority

China’s economy remains heavily dependent on manufacturing and international trade, particularly in electronics, machinery, electric vehicles and industrial equipment.

A stronger yuan makes Chinese exports more expensive for overseas customers, potentially reducing the competitiveness of domestic manufacturers.

Although currency appreciation can reduce the cost of imported commodities and raw materials, Beijing faces difficult economic conditions involving weak domestic demand and persistent uncertainty in international trade.

Financial markets react to policy shift

The intervention follows several weeks of yuan appreciation, supported partly by weakness in the US dollar.

By Friday, 6 November, the Chinese currency was heading towards its first weekly decline after five consecutive weeks of gains.

Chinese equities also came under pressure as a global technology sell-off spread through Asian markets.

Investors are increasingly examining how Beijing will balance monetary accommodation with financial stability and exchange-rate management.

China adjusts its monetary policy framework

The currency intervention follows another significant policy development.

On 2 November, the PBOC began shifting its principal monetary policy benchmark towards an overnight lending rate.

The central bank injected 541 billion yuan into the banking system through overnight reverse repurchase agreements at 1.25%.

The change is intended to improve liquidity management and strengthen the transmission of monetary policy throughout the financial system.

Economic challenges remain

China’s monetary adjustments highlight the difficult balance facing policymakers.

Authorities must support economic activity without encouraging excessive financial speculation or destabilising the currency.

For international investors, the measures demonstrate Beijing’s willingness to intervene when market developments threaten broader economic objectives.

The coming months will reveal whether China’s combination of currency management and monetary support can strengthen domestic confidence while maintaining its position as a leading global trading economy.
