Brazilian banks slash growth forecasts as fiscal worries deepen after Lula re-election

Brazilian banks slash growth forecasts as fiscal worries deepen after Lula re-election

Brazil’s leading financial institutions have sharply lowered their expectations for economic growth in 2027, warning that high interest rates, tighter financial conditions and growing fiscal uncertainty could leave Latin America’s largest economy close to stagnation. The downgrade has increased pressure on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government, which now faces renewed scrutiny over public spending plans, debt sustainability and the risk of weaker tax revenues.【turn247801news24†source】【turn247801search2†source】

Banks turn more cautious

Several of Brazil’s biggest banks have revised their forecasts well below the government’s official projection.

According to Reuters, Bradesco and XP now expect Brazil’s economy to grow by just 0.4% and 0.3% respectively in 2027, while Itaú and BTG Pactual forecast 0.5% and 0.6%. That compares with the federal government’s estimate of 2.46%, highlighting a widening gap between official optimism and private-sector caution. Analysts said such weak growth would mark Brazil’s poorest performance outside the pandemic period since 2016.【turn247801news24†source】

Rates stay high as inflation risks persist

The weaker outlook comes only days after Brazil’s central bank halted its cycle of interest-rate cuts and kept the benchmark Selic rate unchanged at 13.75%.

Policymakers said inflation risks had increased and stressed the need for caution after market volatility following Lula’s re-election. The central bank noted that domestic activity was slowing more sharply, but judged that uncertainty around public finances and the inflation outlook required monetary policy to remain restrictive.【turn247801search2†source】【turn247801search1†source】

Fiscal pressure becomes central issue

The downgrade has important implications for the government’s budget strategy.

Reuters reported that Brazil’s Treasury estimates that every one percentage point shortfall in economic growth reduces federal revenue by 16.6 billion reais. That creates a major challenge for Lula as he seeks to fund welfare commitments and other campaign promises while also aiming to restore the budget to primary surplus. The same Reuters report said all four banks now expect a fiscal deficit in 2027 rather than the small surplus projected by the government.【turn247801news24†source】

Investors watch next steps

For investors, the central question is whether Lula’s economic team can restore confidence quickly enough to avoid a longer period of weak growth and expensive credit.

Brazil remains one of the most important economies in the emerging-market universe, but the latest forecasts suggest that confidence is fragile. Unless the government can convince markets that spending will remain under control, borrowing costs may stay elevated and recovery could be delayed further.【turn247801news24†source】【turn247801search4†source】
