Global giants dominate as African brands fight back in Brand Africa Top 100

Global giants dominate as African brands fight back in Brand Africa Top 100

Global consumer giants continue to dominate Africa’s most admired brands, but the latest Brand Africa Top 100 ranking also highlights the growing influence of home-grown companies that are steadily building loyalty across the continent. The 2026 survey reveals a market where international prestige remains powerful, yet African brands are increasingly proving they can compete on quality, innovation and cultural relevance.

Sportswear and technology lead the rankings
For the second consecutive year, Nike retained the number one position as Africa’s most admired brand, followed by Adidas and Samsung. Apple climbed one place to fourth, while Coca-Cola slipped to fifth despite remaining one of the continent’s most recognised consumer brands.

The top ten reflects the continued strength of global sportswear, technology and automotive brands. Luxury labels such as Gucci maintained strong appeal among African consumers, while Mercedes-Benz recorded one of the most notable advances within the top ten, rising three places to tenth.

Technology remains one of the defining themes of the ranking. Samsung, Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft all feature prominently, reflecting Africa’s rapidly expanding digital economy and growing smartphone penetration.

African champions gain ground
While international brands dominate the highest positions, several African companies delivered impressive performances. South Africa’s MTN remained the highest-ranked African brand at number 11, underlining the importance of telecommunications in the continent’s economic development.

Nigeria’s Dangote, Globacom and Jumia all maintained positions within the top 50, while Zambia’s Trade Kings continued its remarkable rise, climbing nine places to reach 31st.

Perhaps the most encouraging trend for advocates of African enterprise was the strong performance of regional retail and lifestyle brands. Shoprite/Checkers surged 24 positions to 51st, becoming one of the biggest movers in the entire ranking.

Zimbabwe’s Econet entered the list as a new entrant, while South African fashion brands Bathu, GALXBOY, MaXhosa and Redbat all secured positions among Africa’s most admired brands, demonstrating the growing strength of African-created consumer brands.

Luxury and automotive brands remain aspirational
Luxury brands enjoyed another strong year. Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Lacoste, Prada, Fendi and Hermès all appeared in the rankings, illustrating the continuing appeal of premium international brands among Africa’s expanding middle and upper classes.

Automotive manufacturers also remained highly influential. Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Honda, Audi, Renault and Kia all featured among the top 100, highlighting the importance of mobility and status within consumer purchasing decisions.

BMW’s rise from 21st to 14th represented one of the most significant gains among major global brands.

A continent increasingly shaping its own identity
One of the most important findings from the ranking is the growing visibility of African-owned brands. Although global companies still account for the majority of the top positions, the number of African brands earning recognition continues to increase.

Telecommunications, retail, aviation and fashion have emerged as sectors where local companies are building genuine continental recognition. Ethiopian Airlines remains Africa’s highest-ranked airline brand, while MTN continues to demonstrate the power of pan-African expansion strategies.

The Brand Africa rankings suggest that while global brands continue to enjoy immense influence, the future may belong to companies capable of combining international standards with a deep understanding of African consumers.

As Africa’s population, urbanisation and digital connectivity continue to expand, competition for consumer loyalty is likely to intensify. For both multinational corporations and local champions, Africa remains one of the world’s most important growth markets.
