Donald Trump named among world’s leading press freedom predators in new censorship report

Donald Trump named among world’s leading press freedom predators in new censorship report

US President Donald Trump has been included in the 2026 Press Freedom Predators List published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), joining political leaders and organisations accused of undermining independent journalism. The announcement, made on Monday, 2 November, marks a significant escalation in international criticism of the Trump administration’s treatment of journalists and news organisations.

Trump joins controversial global list
The international press freedom organisation identified 33 individuals and organisations accused of restricting journalism through political pressure, intimidation, censorship, economic influence and legal action.

Trump appears in the political category alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

RSF argues that Trump’s second presidential term has witnessed an increasingly systematic effort to weaken independent journalism and influence how the American public receives information.

The organisation distinguishes between Trump’s methods and the physical violence employed against journalists in some authoritarian states, while maintaining that restrictions imposed by his administration represent a serious threat to democratic accountability.

White House restrictions raise alarm
One of the most significant controversies followed Trump’s September decision to prohibit CNN, MS NOW and Politico from accessing White House press facilities.

The administration defended its actions by accusing the organisations of producing inaccurate and misleading coverage.

However, press freedom organisations condemned the restrictions as discriminatory and potentially unconstitutional.

The Committee to Protect Journalists argued that excluding news organisations because of their reporting undermines protections guaranteed by the First Amendment.

A federal judge subsequently ordered temporary restoration of access, finding that the restrictions were likely unconstitutional.

United States falls in global press freedom rankings
The latest RSF World Press Freedom Index places the United States 64th globally, seven positions below its previous ranking.

The organisation attributes the deterioration partly to political attacks on journalists, restrictions on media access and reductions in public funding for international broadcasting.

Trump’s administration has defended its broader approach as an effort to challenge political bias and restore accountability in the media.

Critics, however, argue that government pressure directed at unfavourable reporting risks discouraging investigative journalism and weakening independent scrutiny of political power.

Press freedom under growing international pressure
The 2026 list extends beyond political leaders to include technology companies and influential business figures.

Alphabet and Meta appear in the economic category, while Elon Musk is included among those accused of encouraging hostility towards journalists.

The report illustrates how threats to independent media can emerge through political interference, financial dependence, digital platforms and attacks on journalists’ credibility.

A warning for American democracy
Trump’s inclusion carries particular significance because the United States has historically positioned itself as a global defender of freedom of expression.

The findings do not represent a judicial determination of censorship. Instead, they reflect RSF’s assessment of political conduct and its consequences for independent journalism.

Nevertheless, the report raises a fundamental question about the relationship between democratic governments and the media organisations responsible for scrutinising them.

For journalists, the concern extends beyond individual restrictions. It is whether sustained political pressure could gradually normalise interference with the independent press.
