Arab, African and European markets open cautiously as oil prices fall and global uncertainty persists

Arab, African and European markets open cautiously as oil prices fall and global uncertainty persists

Financial markets across the Middle East, Africa and Europe began Monday, 2 November 2026, facing renewed uncertainty over energy prices, geopolitical tensions and the outlook for global interest rates. Oil prices fell sharply in early trading, while investors assessed developments involving Iran, corporate earnings and the approaching US midterm elections.

Arab markets face pressure from falling oil prices
Saudi Arabia entered Monday following a difficult Sunday session, when the Tadawul All Share Index declined approximately 0.84%.

Qatar provided a striking contrast, with its benchmark index advancing 4.64% on Sunday, supported by energy-related developments and renewed interest in major companies.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi entered the new trading week against a backdrop of declining crude prices and continuing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude fell approximately 2.9% in early Monday trading as diplomatic discussions involving Iran and Qatar continued.

African markets assess global economic risks
African exchanges, including Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos and Cairo, began the week with investors monitoring international commodity prices and currency developments.

South Africa’s Johannesburg Stock Exchange opened for its regular Monday session, with mining companies, financial institutions and energy-related businesses particularly exposed to changing global conditions.

In Nigeria, investors faced the continuing challenge of balancing domestic economic opportunities against inflation, currency movements and foreign capital flows.

Egyptian equities entered Monday after the benchmark EGX30 declined approximately 1.7% on Sunday, following the central bank’s recent interest-rate increase.

European markets focus on technology and economic data
London, Frankfurt, Paris and other major European exchanges opened on Monday with attention focused on technology valuations, corporate earnings and the outlook for monetary policy.

Investors were assessing the consequences of last week’s technology-sector sell-off, particularly concerns over the rising costs of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

German economic indicators and eurozone manufacturing figures were also among the day’s important market considerations.

Lower energy prices offered potential relief to European manufacturers and consumers, although uncertainty over Middle Eastern supplies remained significant.

A decisive week for global investors
Markets across all three regions are entering a potentially volatile week.

Apple’s forthcoming earnings, American economic indicators and Tuesday’s US midterm elections could influence investor confidence internationally.

For Arab economies, oil remains the principal market driver. African exchanges face a combination of commodity exposure and domestic financial pressures, while European investors remain focused on growth, inflation and technology-sector valuations.

The direction of trading will depend increasingly on whether falling energy prices provide sustained economic relief or reflect deeper concerns about global demand.
