Global stock markets delivered a mixed performance on Monday, 19 October, as South Korean shares rebounded strongly, Japanese equities declined and Gulf exchanges came under renewed pressure from geopolitical uncertainty. European markets remained under pressure during afternoon trading, while Wall Street had yet to close.
Asia: South Korea leads the recovery
South Korea’s Kospi surged 1.76% to close at 5,768.01, recovering ground after last week’s technology-driven sell-off. Investors returned to semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related shares despite continuing concerns over valuations.
Japan moved in the opposite direction. The Nikkei 225 declined 0.63% to 64,916.70, while Taiwan’s Taiex fell approximately 0.6%.
Mainland China performed more positively, with the Shanghai Composite advancing 0.39%. Australia’s ASX 200 gained approximately 0.4%, while Singapore’s Straits Times slipped marginally. Hong Kong’s stock market was closed for a holiday.
Arab markets: Geopolitical tensions weigh on sentiment
Gulf stock exchanges ended predominantly lower as investors assessed renewed security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz and uncertainty surrounding regional energy supplies.
Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index declined 0.65% to 10,123.62, with 200 companies falling against 63 advancing.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi each lost approximately 0.3%, while Qatar finished broadly unchanged. Egypt provided a contrast, with its benchmark index advancing around 0.4%.
Africa: Diverging performances
African exchanges produced mixed results in the available Monday market data.
Ghana’s GSE Composite Index gained 1.59%, while Kenya’s Nairobi All Share Index declined 1.86%. Nigeria’s benchmark slipped 0.07%, illustrating the absence of a consistent regional direction.
Market activity reflected differing domestic conditions rather than one unified continental trend.
Europe: Political uncertainty hits equities
European shares were trading lower as the continent approached its closing bell.
France’s CAC 40 was particularly vulnerable following widespread unrest and concerns over public finances. Germany, Britain and Spain also experienced selling pressure, while the broader STOXX Europe 600 declined during the session.
Final European closing figures were not yet available at the time of writing.
Oil and the global outlook
Brent crude traded around $108 per barrel, retreating as investors evaluated the prospect of additional Russian supplies and developments involving Iran.
The day’s completed sessions highlighted a divided global market: technology shares supported parts of Asia, Gulf equities weakened and European investors remained cautious.
Attention now turns to Wall Street and forthcoming corporate earnings for indications of whether the recovery in technology shares can extend.
