From South Africa to Oxford
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on 3 January 1892 in Bloemfontein, in present-day South Africa. After the death of his father, the family returned to England, where Tolkien developed an early interest in languages.
He later studied at Oxford University and served in the British Army during the First World War. He fought in the Battle of the Somme, and the devastation he witnessed became part of the broader experience that influenced his writing.
After the war, Tolkien pursued an academic career. He became a respected professor at Oxford, specialising in Old and Middle English literature. His knowledge of ancient languages and legends helped him construct Middle-earth with an unusual depth and internal consistency.
The birth of Middle-earth
Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937. The story of Bilbo Baggins proved highly successful and encouraged his publisher to request a sequel.
The result was The Lord of the Rings, published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955. The epic followed the struggle to destroy the One Ring and featured characters including Frodo Baggins, Gandalf, Aragorn and Gollum.
Tolkien did more than write stories. He created languages, histories, family trees, maps and mythologies for his fictional world. Elvish languages such as Quenya and Sindarin were developed with detailed grammar and vocabulary.
A lasting literary legacy
Tolkien died on 2 September 1973, aged 81. His son Christopher later edited and published several unfinished works, including The Silmarillion.
More than half a century after Tolkien’s death, Middle-earth remains a global cultural phenomenon. His work established many of the foundations of modern fantasy while demonstrating how imaginary worlds can explore courage, friendship, power, sacrifice and the destructive consequences of unchecked ambition.
