Japanese logistics company AZ-COM Maruwa Holdings plans to use the yen-backed JPYC stablecoin to pay approximately 2,300 transportation partners and independent contractors, including truck drivers. The proposed rollout could become Japan’s first large-scale corporate use of a regulated stablecoin for routine business payments.
Faster payments for contractors
AZ-COM Maruwa intends to use JPYC for outsourcing fees, driver compensation and other payments across its network of partner carriers.
Traditional corporate payments are frequently processed in batches and may require contractors to wait for fixed settlement dates. Blockchain-based transfers can be completed more quickly, potentially allowing drivers and small transport companies to receive money more frequently.
JPYC currently charges no transfer fees, which could make smaller and more regular payments commercially practical. Improved cash flow would be particularly valuable for independent operators responsible for fuel, maintenance, insurance and vehicle-financing costs.
The logistics group reportedly views faster payment as a way to attract and retain additional transport partners. Japan’s distribution industry faces a persistent shortage of drivers caused by an ageing workforce and stricter limits on overtime.
AZ-COM Maruwa operates transportation, warehousing and delivery services and counts Amazon Japan among its major customers.
Company considers ¥1bn investment
The company is also considering a formal partnership with JPYC Inc. and an investment exceeding ¥1 billion, equivalent to approximately $6.2 million.
Such a commitment would connect AZ-COM Maruwa directly with the development of the stablecoin’s payment infrastructure. It would also represent a substantial investment relative to JPYC’s existing circulation.
The parties have not yet disclosed a detailed implementation schedule or explained whether all contractors will be expected to accept digital payments. Practical arrangements covering wallets, identity verification and conversion into conventional bank deposits will be important to adoption.
Japan’s first regulated yen stablecoin
JPYC launched in October 2025 as Japan’s first regulated stablecoin pegged to the yen. Each token is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the Japanese currency and can be redeemed through the issuer’s platform.
The reserves supporting JPYC consist of bank deposits and Japanese government bonds. The company initially waived transaction fees and expects to generate revenue from interest earned on its reserve assets.
The stablecoin operates on several public blockchain networks, allowing users to transfer digital yen without relying on traditional banking hours. Its on-chain circulation has reportedly exceeded ¥2 billion.
JPYC has also moved into retail testing. Convenience-store operator Lawson is preparing a payment trial at a Tokyo location, while other technology companies are developing services connecting bank accounts with stablecoin wallets.
A test of practical adoption
The logistics rollout could provide a more significant test than a limited retail pilot because it involves recurring payments to thousands of businesses and individuals.
However, faster settlement alone will not guarantee widespread use. Contractors must be comfortable managing digital wallets and confident that tokens can be converted easily into ordinary yen. Companies will also need appropriate cybersecurity, accounting and compliance procedures.
Stablecoins avoid much of the price volatility associated with cryptocurrencies, but their reliability depends on reserve management, operational security and regulatory oversight.
If the system delivers lower costs and improved cash flow without creating additional complexity, other Japanese companies with large subcontractor networks could adopt similar models. AZ-COM Maruwa’s plan therefore represents more than a new payment option for drivers: it may show whether regulated stablecoins can move from experimental finance into everyday corporate settlement.
