Global consulting firm Bain & Company believes agentic artificial intelligence could create a software-as-a-service market worth more than $100 billion annually, as enterprises increasingly shift from passive AI tools toward autonomous systems capable of independently executing complex business tasks. The forecast highlights how rapidly AI is evolving from a productivity assistant into an operational infrastructure layer across the global economy.
From chatbots to autonomous execution
Unlike traditional generative AI systems that primarily respond to prompts or create content, agentic AI refers to software systems capable of carrying out multi-step tasks autonomously. These systems can analyse information, make decisions, interact with digital tools and complete workflows with limited human intervention.
According to Bain, enterprises are now moving beyond experimentation with AI-generated text and images toward practical deployment of AI “agents” that can automate customer support, software development, compliance monitoring, procurement, sales operations and financial analysis.
The consultancy believes this transition could fundamentally reshape the SaaS industry, creating entirely new categories of enterprise software over the coming decade.
Enterprise demand accelerates
Corporate demand for automation has surged as businesses seek ways to reduce operational costs, increase productivity and manage growing volumes of digital information. Large organisations are increasingly integrating AI systems into existing infrastructure to improve efficiency across internal operations.
Bain analysts said companies are no longer simply looking for AI features added to existing software products. Instead, many enterprises now want systems capable of independently handling repetitive or structured business processes.
The rapid expansion of cloud computing infrastructure, large language models and enterprise data integration tools has accelerated the commercial viability of agentic AI platforms.
Major technology firms including Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and OpenAI are investing heavily in AI agents capable of interacting with software ecosystems and carrying out increasingly sophisticated digital tasks.
A new battleground for software companies
The rise of agentic AI is expected to intensify competition across the enterprise software industry. Traditional SaaS providers are racing to embed autonomous functionality into their platforms, while startups are launching entirely AI-native business tools.
Investors have shown growing enthusiasm for companies developing AI orchestration systems, autonomous workflow agents and AI-powered enterprise infrastructure. Venture capital funding into agentic AI startups has accelerated sharply during 2026 as businesses seek practical commercial applications for large language models.
Analysts believe industries such as banking, healthcare, logistics, cybersecurity and legal services could become major early adopters due to the large volumes of structured workflows involved.
Challenges remain despite optimism
Despite the strong market forecasts, Bain warned that significant technical and regulatory challenges remain. Businesses continue facing concerns regarding AI reliability, security, data privacy and legal accountability when autonomous systems make decisions independently.
Many enterprises are also struggling to integrate AI agents into older legacy systems and fragmented IT environments.
Labour market implications remain another major area of debate. While supporters argue that AI automation will improve productivity and create new industries, critics warn that widespread deployment could disrupt white-collar employment across administrative and analytical professions.
Still, Bain’s projection reflects growing consensus among technology and financial leaders that agentic AI may represent the next major phase of enterprise digital transformation — potentially reshaping the global software industry far beyond today’s generative AI boom.
