Boris Johnson is expected to stand in the Tory leadership contest to replace his successor Liz Truss, The Telegraph understands.
Mr Johnson was forced out of No 10 on September 6 this year but he is understood to now be taking soundings about trying to get his old job back. He is now cutting short his holiday to head back to the UK
The battle to replace Ms Truss is now getting underway after she announced at lunchtime that she is resigning after concluding that she “cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party”.
She said that she had agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee, that “there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week” and that she will remain in No 10 “until a successor has been chosen”.
Sir Keir Starmer responded to Ms Truss’s resignation by repeating his call for an immediate general election as he said the “British public deserve a proper say on the country’s future”. The Lib Dems and SNP have also called for an election.
