Global equity markets delivered a divided performance on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, with South Korea leading a strong technology-driven recovery in Asia, Chinese markets retreating and European stocks recording modest gains. Middle Eastern exchanges were mixed, while African markets reflected contrasting economic and geopolitical pressures.
Asia: South Korea leads the recovery
South Korea’s Kospi surged 3.29% to 5,735.66 points, making it one of Wednesday’s strongest-performing major indices. Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 0.85% to 64,621.24, supported by renewed interest in semiconductor manufacturers and technology companies.
Taiwan’s Taiex gained 1.28%, Singapore’s Straits Times climbed 0.63%, and Australia’s ASX 200 finished 0.16% higher.
Chinese markets moved in the opposite direction. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.90% to 23,651.87, while the Shanghai Composite declined 0.60% to 3,713.03. Investors remained cautious about the profitability and financing of major artificial intelligence investments.
Europe: Corporate earnings support cautious gains
European equities recovered modestly as encouraging corporate results offset concerns surrounding political instability, inflation and elevated energy prices.
The pan-European STOXX 600 gained approximately 0.24%. Strong performances from EssilorLuxottica, recruitment group Randstad and logistics company DSV helped support sentiment.
However, French supermarket operator Carrefour suffered a sharp decline after reducing its annual earnings forecast amid disruption associated with civil unrest.
British inflation reaching 3.5% added to uncertainty over the Bank of England’s next interest-rate decision.
Middle East: Saudi stocks decline
Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index fell 0.26% to 9,926.62 points, pressured by banking shares and continuing regional geopolitical uncertainty.
Dubai gained approximately 0.4%, while Abu Dhabi declined 0.6%. Qatar recovered 0.5%, ending a five-session losing streak.
Investors continued monitoring tensions involving Iran, maritime security and oil supplies.
Africa: Egypt advances while Johannesburg retreats
Egypt’s EGX30 climbed approximately 1.5%, supported by gains in Commercial International Bank and property developer Talaat Moustafa Group.
South Africa’s Johannesburg All Share Index moved in the opposite direction, declining approximately 0.4% as investors weighed international uncertainty and commodity-market developments.
Americas: Trading continues
At the time of this report, Wall Street and the principal Latin American exchanges had not yet completed Wednesday’s trading session. Their final performance will therefore form part of the later global market close.
Wednesday’s completed sessions highlighted a persistent division between enthusiasm for technology earnings and concerns about inflation, geopolitical instability and the rising cost of capital.
