Asian markets plunge as technology sell-off deepens, while Australian shares edge lower

Asian markets plunge as technology sell-off deepens, while Australian shares edge lower

Asian stock markets suffered heavy losses on Thursday, 15 October 2026, as a sharp retreat in technology and semiconductor shares spread across the region. South Korea and Japan recorded particularly steep declines, while Australian equities finished comparatively resilient despite weaker domestic employment figures and renewed concerns about US interest rates.

Japan: Nikkei suffers heavy losses
Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed around 4.7% lower at 64,585 points, extending a sell-off concentrated in technology and artificial intelligence-related companies.

SoftBank Group, a major investor in artificial intelligence businesses, came under significant pressure, while semiconductor companies including Kioxia and Tokyo Electron also suffered sharp declines.

The retreat reflected growing investor concerns about elevated technology valuations, rising financing costs and the sustainability of investment in AI infrastructure.

South Korea: Semiconductor shares lead the decline
South Korea experienced one of the region’s most severe trading sessions.

The benchmark Kospi plunged more than 7%, with selling pressure particularly intense among the country’s largest semiconductor manufacturers.

Samsung Electronics fell approximately 9.5%, while SK Hynix lost around 11%, as investors reduced exposure to companies closely linked to the global artificial intelligence investment cycle.

The scale of the decline highlighted the vulnerability of technology-heavy markets to changes in international investor sentiment.

China, Hong Kong and Taiwan also retreat
Chinese equities weakened alongside the wider region.

The Shanghai Composite fell by approximately 1.5%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined around 1.4%.

Taiwan’s technology-heavy market also suffered substantial losses, despite continued strong demand for advanced semiconductors used in artificial intelligence systems.

Investors remained concerned that higher borrowing costs and stretched valuations could weigh on future technology investment.

Australia: Shares show relative resilience
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 finished modestly lower, around 8,716 points, avoiding the dramatic losses recorded in Japan and South Korea.

Australian investors also absorbed disappointing employment data showing a decline of 39,300 jobs in September, against expectations of an increase.

The weaker labour market figures added uncertainty about domestic economic momentum and the outlook for monetary policy.

US inflation sends shockwaves across Asia-Pacific
Thursday’s losses followed stronger-than-expected American inflation figures, with US consumer prices rising 3.7% annually in September.

The data increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again, putting additional pressure on growth-oriented companies.

For Asian and Australian markets, Thursday’s session demonstrated how quickly changes in US monetary expectations can affect international equity valuations, particularly in economies heavily exposed to technology and semiconductor manufacturing.
