Nigeria’s AI skills push could give West African small businesses a new growth engine

Nigeria’s AI skills push could give West African small businesses a new growth engine

A major artificial-intelligence training initiative in Lagos is targeting 10,000 people with practical AI skills, providing another sign that West Africa is moving beyond discussing artificial intelligence towards putting the technology into the hands of entrepreneurs, workers and small businesses.

AI skills move closer to everyday business
The EkoAI Academy initiative, launched by the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund together with InnoPower, is designed to provide practical AI and prompt-engineering skills through a network of certified trainers.

The significance for West Africa extends beyond creating another generation of technology specialists.

For small businesses, AI increasingly offers relatively inexpensive tools capable of handling everyday tasks such as customer communication, marketing, invoicing, inventory management, financial analysis and preparation of business documents.

That matters particularly in markets where entrepreneurs frequently operate with small teams and limited access to specialist staff.

Evidence of an SME growth effect
New academic research covering small businesses in Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone provides evidence that the impact could be substantial.

A study involving 404 business owners and managers found that AI adoption had a positive and statistically significant effect on market growth, competitive position and company size.

Separate research into West African SMEs has identified improved forecasting, financial intelligence, risk management and operational efficiency among the potential benefits of AI adoption.

A mobile-first opportunity
The next stage will depend heavily on how AI reaches entrepreneurs.

Nigeria’s small-business economy operates under constraints including expensive electricity, uneven broadband availability, limited access to finance and shortages of specialist digital skills.

That makes mobile-first, low-cost AI particularly important.

Instead of requiring companies to purchase expensive enterprise software, practical AI services can increasingly be delivered through smartphones and subscription-based platforms already familiar to business owners.

For a small retailer in Lagos, trader in Accra or entrepreneur in Freetown, the important question is therefore not whether they can build artificial intelligence themselves. It is whether AI can help them sell more, understand their customers, reduce administrative work and make better financial decisions.

The productivity opportunity for West Africa
This is where initiatives such as EkoAI could have their greatest economic impact.

West Africa has millions of small businesses that individually employ relatively few people but collectively form a critical part of the region’s employment and commercial infrastructure.

Giving those entrepreneurs access to inexpensive digital intelligence could effectively provide a small company with capabilities previously available mainly to larger organisations.

The opportunity is therefore bigger than creating AI startups.

If AI training, affordable mobile technology and local-language solutions develop together, artificial intelligence could become a productivity tool for ordinary West African businesses — helping a shop, restaurant, transport operator or small exporter operate more efficiently without dramatically increasing its workforce or costs.

For West Africa, that may ultimately prove more economically important than producing the region’s next technology unicorn.
