Asian markets open higher as Japan leads a cautious rebound

Asian stock markets opened mostly higher on Wednesday, 30 September, as an overnight fall in oil prices offered relief to investors facing rising borrowing costs. Japan led the early advance, while enthusiasm for technology shares helped support sentiment despite continuing uncertainty over the war in Iran.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained approximately 1.4% in opening trading, while the broader Topix rose 0.6%. South Korea’s Kospi and the technology-focused Kosdaq initially advanced more than 1%, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged higher.

The positive start followed modest losses on Wall Street, where rising government bond yields continued to weigh on equities.

Japan leads, but gains remain uneven

As morning trading progressed, the Nikkei remained around 1.3% higher. SoftBank and semiconductor-related companies were among the gainers, reflecting continued investor interest in artificial intelligence.

Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose approximately 0.1%, while the Shanghai Composite added 0.3%.

South Korea’s initial momentum weakened, with the Kospi surrendering most of its early advance. The divergence showed that the regional recovery remained uneven, with opening gains offering no guarantee of sustained buying.

Oil offers some breathing space

Brent crude fell 2.6% on Tuesday to settle at $102.59 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate dropped around 3.5% to $89.38.

The retreat followed reports of recovering Saudi crude exports through Red Sea ports, easing some immediate concerns about supply disruption.

However, oil edged higher again during Wednesday’s Asian session, with Brent trading near $103. Uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continued to leave energy markets vulnerable to further disruption.

For Asia’s energy-importing economies, the overnight decline offered some relief, although prices remained elevated.

Borrowing costs remain the larger challenge

US ten-year Treasury yields hovered around 5.24% in Asian trading, keeping global financing conditions under pressure.

Higher bond yields raise the cost of corporate borrowing and can make equities less attractive relative to fixed-income investments.

Wednesday’s early gains therefore suggested cautious resilience rather than a decisive improvement in the outlook. Investors continued to balance earnings expectations and technology demand against expensive energy, geopolitical uncertainty and the prospect of persistently high interest rates.
