At the same time that the world’s leaders are lamenting the death of Alexei Navalny, the Russian propaganda takes the opportunity to redirect the focus from the opposition politician to telling about how we in the West reacted to the news.
“There is no forensic examination yet, but the Western world’s conclusions are already clear,” writes Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova in her Telegram channel when she refers to world leaders accusing Russia of the murder.
That’s what it sounds like in all pro-Russian social media channels – that the West accuses Putin of murder without having any evidence whatsoever.
“Russia has no reason”
Margarita Simonjan, editor-in-chief of the Russian state media company RT suggests that Latvia should receive an Oscar for its comment that Navalny was murdered by the Kremlin.
“Everyone has long since forgotten about Navalny and there is no reason to kill him, especially before the election. On the other hand, it is beneficial for completely different forces,” she writes on Telegram.
The US is accused of being behind the murder
That Russia has nothing to gain from the murder is another narrative spread within Russian propaganda. At the same time, it is suggested that the United States is behind Navalny’s death.
On Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov’s program, a guest claims that Navalny was murdered by the CIA in order to use it against Russia.
The pro-Russian Telegram channel Tsargrada’s analysis also singles out the US:
“Those who will now be the happiest are the lobbyists who distribute American military aid to Ukraine.”
Want to change focus
Across Russia, people took to the streets to mourn Navalny. One such action was hijacked by employees of Readovka, a Telegram channel with close ties to the Kremlin. According to Readovka, the purpose was to remind people of the attack on Belgorod on Thursday, where, among other things, a four-month-old girl died. Russia blames Ukraine for the attack.
“First Prigozhin and now Navalny”
At the same time, the wives of mobilized Russian soldiers, who in recent months have protested against their husbands being allowed to return home, mourn Navalny’s death.
“First Prigozhin and now Navalny. It has been shown that their lives are worth nothing. Just like our men’s lives. We want to express our condolences to Aleksej’s family,” writes the protest group on social media.
