NHX | Palm Bay under water
A stalled weather system drew moisture from the Atlantic and sent repeated downpours over Palm Bay, Florida, on 1 and 2 November. Local officials reported two deaths after the flooding. As the water receded, residents found damaged homes, sinkholes and roads washed away. The flood came as a strengthening El Niño raised the odds of a wetter Florida winter.
Why the rain kept falling
The National Weather Service reported 16–22 inches (406–559 mm) of rain in a single day across parts of southern Brevard County. Radar estimates put the storm total near 28 inches (711 mm) in parts of the Palm Bay area. Easterly winds carried moist air inland as successive downpours fell over the same communities. The US Geological Survey measured record flows at six of the eight stream stations its crews surveyed.
What El Niño means for Florida
El Niño tends to shift the winter storm track southwards. The US winter outlook favours above-average rainfall across Florida from December through February. That outlook describes the odds for the season as a whole. The severity of the Palm Bay flood depended on where the heaviest rain fell and how long the disturbance lingered.
How warming can intensify downpours
Warmer air can hold more water vapour, giving storms more moisture to draw on. The available evidence does not quantify how much human-caused warming contributed to the Palm Bay rainfall. An event-specific study could assess that contribution by comparing the likelihood or intensity of similar downpours in today’s climate with simulations of a climate without human-caused warming.
What ‘1,000-year rain’ means
In some locations, rainfall exceeded a threshold associated with an estimated 0.1 per cent chance in any given year for a specified location and duration. That estimate relies on historical records, which may become less reliable guides as rainfall patterns change. In Palm Bay, washed-out roads showed how long the disruption can last. Some residents remained cut off even as the floodwater began to recede.
