France deploys 70,000 police as government braces for renewed nationwide unrest

France deploys 70,000 police as government braces for renewed nationwide unrest

France is deploying approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country on Saturday, 24 October 2026, in an unprecedented security operation aimed at preventing a repeat of last weekend’s violent demonstrations. Elite counter-terrorism units, armoured vehicles and helicopters will support the operation as President Emmanuel Macron’s government struggles to contain growing public anger over living costs and deteriorating public services.

Massive security operation across France
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the mobilisation following some of the worst street violence France has experienced in years.

The deployment represents an increase of approximately 10,000 officers compared with the previous weekend.

Specialist units, including RAID, GIGN and BRI, normally associated with counter-terrorism and hostage rescue operations, will support conventional security forces.

Authorities are also deploying water cannon, armoured vehicles, mounted police, helicopters and surveillance drones.

Nuñez warned that radical groups had circulated calls for violence and attacks against public buildings on social media.

Violence follows nationwide demonstrations
The security mobilisation follows demonstrations on 17 October that began largely peacefully but escalated into extensive rioting and looting in several cities.

Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other urban centres experienced violent confrontations, damaged businesses and attacks on public property.

In Limoges, the town hall was set on fire and partially destroyed.

Approximately 3,000 shops and businesses were reportedly damaged or looted during the disturbances.

What began as student protests over deteriorating school conditions has developed into a broader movement against rising living costs, housing pressures and reductions in public services.

Protest restrictions trigger criticism
Authorities have restricted or prohibited demonstrations in several major cities.

In Paris, planned marches have been redirected away from central commercial districts, while parts of Lyon will remain inaccessible to protesters.

Major cultural institutions, including the Louvre, are closing as a precaution.

Trade unions and opposition politicians have criticised the restrictions, arguing that peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental democratic right.

Amnesty International has also expressed concern that the measures threaten freedom of assembly.

Political pressure intensifies ahead of election
The unrest comes approximately six months before France’s presidential election, when Macron must leave office after completing his second consecutive term.

Marine Le Pen’s National Rally is holding its party congress in Orléans this weekend, where large counter-demonstrations are expected.

Recent polling indicates growing support for the far-right movement as public dissatisfaction with the government deepens.

Economic uncertainty adds to the crisis
The disturbances are creating additional pressure on France’s already fragile economic outlook.

Damaged businesses, disrupted transport and security costs are affecting commercial activity, while concerns about government debt continue to trouble investors.

The unrest is also spreading beyond France, with demonstrations planned in Italy, Spain, Portugal and other European countries.

Saturday’s operation represents a critical test for the French government as it attempts to restore public order without further inflaming political tensions.
