Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former Fox News personality, prosecutor and one-time fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., has been forced out as United States ambassador to Greece following allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of political influence. Her departure on 13 October 2026, less than a year after arriving in Athens, has exposed questions about political appointments, personal relationships and the boundaries between diplomacy and private interests.
From prosecutor to television celebrity
Born in San Francisco in 1969, Guilfoyle began her professional career as a prosecutor before becoming a prominent television personality.
She was married to Gavin Newsom, now California’s governor, from 2001 to 2006. Later, she became a familiar face on Fox News, where her outspoken conservative commentary helped establish her national profile.
After leaving the network in 2018, she became increasingly involved in Republican politics and Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns.
Her relationship with Donald Trump Jr., which ended in 2024, placed her within the president’s family and political circle.
A diplomatic appointment built on political loyalty
Trump nominated Guilfoyle as ambassador to Greece in December 2024. She arrived in Athens in November 2025, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
Her appointment attracted considerable attention because of her celebrity background and close political connections rather than conventional diplomatic experience.
In Greece, she cultivated relationships with political leaders, wealthy businesspeople and influential figures in the energy sector.
The allegations that ended her appointment
According to investigations reported by The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle allegedly sought $100,000 from Trump supporter Eric Deters to settle a personal credit card bill while offering access to senior administration officials.
Additional allegations concerned expensive hospitality, private aircraft travel financed by Greek businessmen and the promotion of commercial interests connected to influential local figures.
Her lawyers disputed the allegations, including the authenticity of certain messages, and maintained that she followed applicable government regulations.
Guilfoyle has categorically denied wrongdoing. The State Department’s inspector general is investigating the allegations, which have not been established as criminal offences.
Trump withdraws his support
On 13 October, the White House announced that Guilfoyle had been asked to resign.
Trump acknowledged that he was dissatisfied with the reports surrounding her conduct, despite previously praising her work.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio subsequently reminded diplomats of their ethical responsibilities and the importance of avoiding conflicts of interest.
A political scandal with diplomatic consequences
Guilfoyle’s departure comes at a sensitive moment for relations between Washington and Athens, particularly concerning energy cooperation, defence and regional security.
For Greece, the controversy raises questions about diplomatic influence and commercial interests.
For Washington, it highlights the risks associated with appointing politically connected personalities to sensitive international positions.
Guilfoyle maintains her innocence, but her brief diplomatic career has become another controversy involving the intersection of political loyalty, personal wealth and public office.
