A White House state dinner brought warm speeches and an elaborate welcome for China’s president. The talks that preceded it covered trade, Taiwan and artificial intelligence, but produced no announced breakthrough.
A ceremonial finish to a serious day
Donald Trump hosted Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the White House on Thursday evening after a day of meetings between the American and Chinese delegations. The dinner gave both leaders a chance to emphasise dialogue despite the disputes between their countries.
In his toast, Trump acknowledged that the United States and China have different political systems, but spoke warmly of the ties between their people. Xi said their discussions had produced a common understanding on many issues. He did not identify new agreements.
Warm words across the table
Xi drew a parallel between Trump’s ambition for America and China’s aim of national rejuvenation, saying the two goals could reinforce each other. His speech called for the two powers to find a way to work together while managing their differences.
Trump’s remarks were more personal. He praised his relationship with Xi and then briefly departed from his prepared toast to invite guests to view the construction site of his planned White House ballroom.
The dinner and its guests
The East Room was decorated in red and gold. The menu included squash soup, sesame-crusted sea bass and a cherry dessert. Leading figures from the technology industry, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman and Jensen Huang, joined the political and diplomatic guests.
Their presence reflected one of the central issues in the relationship: competition over advanced technology. At the dinner, however, ceremony took precedence over policy.
What the talks did — and did not — settle
Earlier discussions touched on trade, artificial intelligence and Taiwan. Xi called for regular contact between the two countries’ militaries to help prevent a crisis. According to the Chinese account of the meeting, he also pressed Washington to oppose Taiwanese independence.
Neither leader announced a major agreement on those questions. Xi’s description of a “common understanding” suggested a willingness to keep negotiating, but offered little detail about what had changed.
The next test
The evening ended with handshakes, toasts and a public show of respect. Its practical value will become clearer when Washington and Beijing set out what they agreed to pursue after Xi’s visit. For now, the dinner eased the tone; the hardest decisions remain ahead.
