On this day in 1510: Italian artist Sandro Botticelli, one of the greatest painters of the Florentine Renaissance, died.

One of the defining artistic voices of the Florentine Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli, died on 17 May 1510 in Florence. More than five centuries later, his paintings remain among the most recognisable works in European art history, symbolising both the intellectual ambition and visual elegance of Renaissance Italy. Botticelli’s ability to merge mythology, religion and human emotion helped establish Florence as the cultural heart of Europe during one of history’s most transformative artistic periods.

From Florence to immortality
Born Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi around 1445 in Florence, Botticelli emerged during a period of immense political, philosophical and artistic change. Florence, under the influence of the powerful Medici family, became a centre for art, science and humanist thought. Botticelli developed a distinctive style characterised by flowing lines, delicate figures and poetic compositions.

He trained under Fra Filippo Lippi and quickly attracted influential patrons. By the late 1470s, Botticelli had become one of Florence’s most sought-after painters, receiving commissions for churches, noble families and public institutions.

Masterpieces that defined an era
Among Botticelli’s most celebrated works are The Birth of Venus and Primavera, both created during the 1480s. These paintings represented a revolutionary return to classical mythology and human beauty, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman ideals.

“The Birth of Venus” in particular became one of the most iconic paintings ever produced. Its portrayal of Venus emerging from the sea demonstrated a sophisticated blend of mythology, symbolism and Renaissance humanism. The work departed from medieval artistic traditions and reflected the growing intellectual confidence of Renaissance Europe.

Botticelli also painted numerous religious works, including Madonnas, altarpieces and frescoes. His emotional depth and refined compositions influenced generations of artists that followed.

Changing fortunes in later life
Despite his enormous success, Botticelli’s later years were marked by changing artistic tastes and political instability in Florence. The rise of more technically advanced painters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo gradually overshadowed his style.

The religious influence of Dominican preacher Girolamo Savonarola also affected Florence’s cultural climate. Art became more spiritual and austere, and Botticelli’s mythological works lost favour among patrons.

By the time of his death in 1510, Botticelli had faded from public prominence. However, the 19th century saw a major rediscovery of his work, particularly among British Pre-Raphaelite artists and historians who admired his elegance and emotional sensitivity.

An enduring influence on global art
Today, Botticelli’s paintings remain central attractions in museums and galleries around the world, particularly at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where many of his masterpieces are housed. His work continues to influence fashion, cinema, advertising and contemporary visual culture.

More than 500 years after his death, Botticelli remains a defining symbol of Renaissance creativity and artistic refinement. His paintings continue to capture the imagination of audiences worldwide, preserving the spirit of Florence’s golden age for future generations.
