Asian markets closed mixed on Thursday, with investors cautious ahead of central bank guidance from the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole symposium. Japanese and Hong Kong equities weakened, while South Korea, Australia and India posted gains.
Japan and Hong Kong under pressure
Tokyo’s Nikkei declined 0.6 per cent as technology exporters slipped on yen strength, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng finished flat amid subdued property and financial sector sentiment.
Gains elsewhere in Asia
South Korea’s KOSPI advanced 0.7 per cent on the back of semiconductor strength, while Australia’s ASX touched a fresh record high supported by strong mining demand. In India, the Nifty50 climbed above 25,000 and the Sensex surpassed 82,000, both extending rallies into a sixth consecutive session.
Outlook
The region remains sensitive to U.S. policy direction. Traders await Powell’s remarks at Jackson Hole to assess whether momentum in Asia’s outperformers, particularly India, can continue.
