Major adult websites in the UK have experienced a sharp decline in traffic after the government enforced mandatory age verification rules. The Online Safety Act, effective from 25 July 2025, requires users to prove they are over 18 through ID documents, credit card verification, or biometric checks. Data indicates that Pornhub, the UK’s most visited adult site, saw daily visits fall from 3.6 million to 1.9 million within two weeks of enforcement, a decline of 47%. Other major sites, including XVideos and xHamster, reported similar decreases of 47% and 39%, respectively, while OnlyFans experienced a smaller drop of approximately 10%. Analysts attribute this to the additional verification steps creating friction for casual users and deterring visits from those unwilling to submit personal data.
Rise in VPN usage and alternative sites
Many users have sought ways to bypass age verification by using virtual private networks (VPNs), leading to a surge in subscriptions to VPN services. In addition, smaller and less-regulated adult websites have seen increased traffic, as users explore alternatives to mainstream platforms.
