Israel has launched one of its most intense military operations in Gaza in recent months, with airstrikes and ground incursions resulting in more than 250 Palestinian deaths in just two days. The assault marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict and has drawn urgent international concern over the humanitarian fallout.
The operation, named “Gideon’s Chariots” by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), has focused on key areas in northern and southern Gaza, including the heavily bombarded towns of Beit Lahia and Khan Younis. While the IDF claims it is targeting Hamas infrastructure and leadership, Gaza’s health officials report that many of the dead are civilians, including women and children.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that the campaign will continue until Hamas’s military capabilities are decisively degraded. President Donald Trump, while reaffirming support for Israel, acknowledged the dire conditions in Gaza and called for immediate humanitarian relief. His comments that “people are starving” marked a shift in tone from earlier in the conflict, where U.S. support for Israeli operations was largely unqualified.
As the offensive intensifies, diplomatic pressure is building for a renewed ceasefire and expanded access for humanitarian aid. Observers warn that unless hostilities are curbed, the region risks further destabilisation and a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.
