Part 6: Wallenberg, IG Farben and the Nazi industrial network

Part 6: Wallenberg, IG Farben and the Nazi industrial network

The documented connections between Wallenberg interests and IG Farben run through identifiable companies, board positions and credit agreements. Norsk Hydro and a wartime aluminium venture in occupied Norway provide a concrete trail linking Swedish banking to German industrial expansion, while other alleged connections require more cautious treatment.

IG Farben was a major supplier of synthetic fuel and rubber to Nazi Germany. Its Auschwitz industrial project exploited concentration-camp prisoners, housed at Monowitz from 1942. That record makes precision essential when examining its external business relationships.

The Norwegian corporate link
Marcus Wallenberg senior, born in 1864, chaired Norsk Hydro from 1905 until 1942. He must be distinguished from his son Marcus Wallenberg junior, another prominent banker.

In 1941, Norsk Hydro, IG Farben and the German state-owned company Nordag established Nordisk Lettmetall. Each held one-third of the venture, which developed light-metal production at Herøya.

Research published by Sweden’s Living History Forum identifies Hydro’s managing director Axel Aubert and chairman Marcus Wallenberg among its representatives in the negotiations. They also worked with Farben representatives on a share issue to finance Hydro’s participation.

Following the 1941 restructuring, German interests held 53% of Hydro, including 32% held by IG Farben and 16% by Nordag.

Credit agreements connect Stockholm to Herøya
In December 1941 and May 1942, Stockholms Enskilda Bank entered into credit agreements totalling SEK11.2 million for Nordisk Lettmetall’s equipment purchases. Norsk Hydro guaranteed the credits.

The Swedish government supported the arrangements for supply reasons. Norway’s government-in-exile protested, regarding the venture as a German armaments enterprise and the Swedish financing as assistance to the occupation power’s war effort.

These were specific financing decisions involving an industrial partnership with IG Farben.

What the evidence does not establish
Sweden’s 1999 commission on Jewish assets recorded Enskilda Bank’s 20% holding in Hollandsche Koopmans Bank and noted allegations concerning connections to IG Farben. However, it explicitly did not investigate those relationships further within its remit.

That limitation cannot be treated as either a comprehensive exoneration or proof of every allegation.

The documented Norwegian transactions establish commercial participation and financial support. They do not, by themselves, establish that Wallenberg bankers directed IG Farben’s Auschwitz operations or possessed particular knowledge of its crimes. Those questions require separate evidence concerning individuals, dates, decisions and information available at the time.
