Trump’s $20 million advertising campaign sparks taxpayer funding dispute

Trump promises every US adult $5,000 if Republicans win Congress

Taxpayer-funded television adverts celebrating Donald Trump have triggered demands for federal investigations just weeks before the US midterm elections. Democratic lawmakers are challenging whether public money has financed political promotion, while the White House insists the broadcasts are legitimate public service announcements.

The dispute centres on an advertising campaign backed by $20 million allocated from Department of Homeland Security funds, according to Associated Press reporting. The sum represents the campaign’s funding allocation, rather than a confirmed total already spent on broadcasts.

Watchdogs asked to investigate
Representatives Jamie Raskin and George Whitesides have asked the Government Accountability Office and the Office of Special Counsel to examine the advertisements’ financing and whether administration officials violated federal law.

Their request, publicised on 1 October, seeks a full account of the money used, the government accounts involved and responsibility for approving and distributing the material. The lawmakers argue that the advertisements resemble election campaigning rather than public information. These are allegations requiring examination, not established legal findings.

Presidential promotion on national television
The adverts combine images of Trump with patriotic imagery and political messages. One refers to a confrontation with the “deep state”, while another celebrates a “golden age of America”. They carry disclosures identifying the US government as the payer.

Reuters reported that one advertisement closely resembles material from Trump’s 2024 campaign. Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr has defended the broadcasts as appropriate, while advocacy organisation Public Citizen has submitted a complaint challenging them.

White House rejects the criticism
In a published response, the White House argues that Trump is not on the ballot and that the advertisements contain no electoral call to action. It describes their purpose as encouraging patriotism and explaining why the country should be defended.

The administration also points to advertising under previous Republican and Democratic presidents, including campaigns addressing healthcare, drugs and public health.

That defence leaves the central dispute unresolved: whether these particular broadcasts serve an authorised public purpose or improperly promote a political figure.

With congressional elections approaching, the controversy places government spending and political accountability alongside the campaign itself. The lawmakers’ request seeks an independent determination of where public information ends and taxpayer-funded political promotion begins.
