On this day in 1997: Diana’s death stunned the world

On this day in 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died following a car crash in Paris. She was 36 years old. Her sudden death triggered an extraordinary wave of grief and became one of the defining global events of the decade.

The fatal night in Paris
Diana was travelling with her companion, Dodi Fayed, when their Mercedes crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel shortly after midnight. The couple had left the Ritz Hotel and were being followed by photographers.

Fayed and the driver, Henri Paul, died at the scene. Diana was taken to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where doctors attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead several hours later. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the only person in the vehicle to survive.

A British inquest later concluded that Diana and Fayed had been unlawfully killed because of the grossly negligent driving of Henri Paul and the pursuing paparazzi. Paul’s impairment by alcohol and the fact that the passengers were not wearing seatbelts were also identified as contributing factors.

A global outpouring of grief
News of Diana’s death spread rapidly around the world. Thousands of people gathered outside Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and other royal residences, leaving flowers, letters and personal tributes.

Her funeral was held at Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997. Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their mother’s coffin alongside Prince Charles, Prince Philip and Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer. The ceremony was watched across the world and became one of the most significant televised events of its time.

A legacy beyond royalty
Diana had become internationally admired for combining royal visibility with unusually direct humanitarian work. She challenged public fears surrounding HIV and AIDS and brought global attention to the suffering caused by landmines.

Her death also changed the relationship between the British monarchy, the media and the public. Twenty-nine years later, Diana remains remembered not only as a princess, but as a figure whose compassion and vulnerability helped redefine modern royalty.
