The glacier collapse that triggered a catastrophic flash flood along the Nepal–Tibet border has intensified warnings that climate change is destabilising high-altitude regions. At least 469 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, while almost 1,000 remain missing across Nepal and Tibet, including hundreds of foreign tourists and pilgrims.
A chain reaction through the Himalayas
The disaster began on Wednesday when a large section of glacier and surrounding rock collapsed near Langtang Lirung, a mountain rising more than 7,000 metres above sea level.
Satellite images indicate that part of the glacier broke away at an altitude of approximately 5,200 metres before falling around 1,200 metres into the valley. The impact sent ice, rock, mud and water into the Lhende Khola River, which feeds the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
Water levels downstream reportedly rose by between seven and nine metres within 30 minutes. Villages, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and border infrastructure were overwhelmed by the rapidly moving torrent.
An earthquake was initially suspected. Subsequent analysis by the United States Geological Survey indicated that the seismic signal was instead generated by the glacier collapse and the resulting debris flow.
Unusual heat may have weakened the mountain
Scientists have not established a single immediate cause for the collapse. However, unusually high temperatures may have weakened the snow, ice and frozen rock holding the mountainside together.
Ground temperatures measured approximately 10 kilometres from the site reached their highest level in two years shortly before the disaster. Researchers said the warmth may have melted snow, filled cracks with water and thawed ice that acted as a bond between fractured sections of rock.
Heavy monsoon rainfall may have added further pressure by saturating soil, increasing river levels and adding water to an already unstable mountain system.
Climate change increases instability
Experts have cautioned against describing global warming as the sole trigger before a complete geological investigation has been conducted. Earthquakes, natural erosion, rainfall and local construction can also influence mountain stability.
The wider trend is nevertheless clear. Higher temperatures reduce the support provided by glaciers on steep slopes, increase meltwater and accelerate the thawing of mountain permafrost.
Glaciologists compare frozen mountain rock to broken material held together by ice. As that ice disappears, entire slopes can become vulnerable to sudden collapse.
Nepal’s mountains have lost close to one-third of their ice over slightly more than three decades. The United Nations has previously reported that the country’s glaciers melted 65 per cent faster during the most recent decade than during the preceding one.
Rescue operations face new danger
Nepalese emergency teams have used helicopters, heavy equipment and detection dogs to search through mud and debris. Thousands of people remain isolated after roads and bridges were destroyed.
The operation was temporarily halted on Friday when a barrier lake created by the debris began overflowing near the border. The lake had accumulated more than 2.5 million cubic metres of water, creating the risk of another destructive surge.
Residents in Nepal’s Rasuwa district were ordered towards higher ground, while Chinese rescue personnel withdrew from exposed areas. At least 540 foreign nationals are among those still missing.
Mountain communities require earlier warnings
The Nepal tragedy demonstrates how a single collapse can produce several connected hazards: an avalanche, debris flow, flash flood, blocked river and potentially a second flood from an unstable lake.
Scientists say stronger satellite monitoring, temperature sensors and river-warning systems are urgently needed across the Himalayas. Similar risks exist in the Alps, Andes, Caucasus and other regions where glaciers and permafrost are retreating.
As warming continues, mountain communities may face disasters that develop faster and travel considerably further than traditional hazard planning anticipated.
