At least 14 people have been killed and 27 injured in a major overnight Russian attack on the Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian emergency services, as missiles and drones struck residential, industrial and logistics areas surrounding the capital.
Air raid alerts sounded across Kyiv shortly after midnight and remained active for more than an hour as residents were urged to seek shelter. Explosions were reported in the capital and several neighbouring districts while Ukrainian air-defence units attempted to intercept the incoming weapons.
The bombardment caused extensive fires and damage in the Brovary, Bucha, Boryspil and Fastiv districts, according to regional authorities. Warehouses, industrial buildings, homes and vehicles were reported to have been damaged or destroyed.
Emergency workers continued searching damaged buildings during the morning amid concerns that people could remain trapped beneath the rubble. Several of the injured were said to be in a serious condition.
Capital also suffers casualties
Kyiv itself was struck at several locations. The city’s military administration said damage had been recorded in at least seven areas, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that rescuers were working at a destroyed warehouse close to the city centre.
At least one person was reported killed inside the capital, bringing the combined death toll for Kyiv and the surrounding region to at least 15. The number of injured across the wider metropolitan area was also continuing to rise as rescue operations progressed.
Fragments from intercepted weapons reportedly fell near residential buildings, while fires broke out at several commercial and industrial sites. Authorities also reported an ammonia leak at one damaged location, prompting emergency crews to contain the affected area.
Residents described hearing repeated explosions during the night as smoke rose above parts of the city and its suburbs. Public transport and other services were disrupted in some districts while emergency teams cleared debris and assessed structural damage.
Russia claims military targets were struck
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had attacked logistics facilities allegedly being used to support Ukrainian military operations. Ukrainian officials rejected that characterisation, saying civilian homes and workplaces had also been hit.
The claims made by both sides could not immediately be independently verified.
The attack follows a series of increasingly heavy Russian bombardments of Kyiv during recent weeks. Ukraine has repeatedly warned that its air-defence resources are under growing pressure, particularly when facing ballistic missiles travelling at high speed.
Ukrainian authorities have continued to call on Western partners to provide additional Patriot air-defence systems and interceptor missiles. Kyiv argues that these systems are essential for protecting major cities and critical infrastructure from Russia’s expanding missile campaign.
Wednesday’s attack once again forced millions of people in and around the capital to spend part of the night in shelters, underground stations or protected rooms. Officials warned that the final casualty figures could increase as emergency crews continued searching the most heavily damaged locations.
