Indian shares opened lower on Thursday as rapidly rising crude oil prices and renewed tensions in the Middle East weakened investor confidence.
The BSE Sensex opened at 76,515.10, down 239.95 points or 0.31 per cent. The Nifty 50 began trading at 23,904.80, falling 91.45 points or 0.38 per cent.
India is particularly sensitive to higher energy prices because it imports most of the crude oil it consumes. A sustained increase could place pressure on inflation, the trade deficit, the rupee and corporate profit margins.
The weaker opening extended the market’s recent losses. Pharmaceutical, banking, aviation and energy-consuming companies faced early pressure, while domestic oil producers received some support from higher crude prices.
Investors were also monitoring quarterly corporate earnings for indications of how companies are managing higher costs and uncertain global demand. The cautious opening left the Nifty below the psychologically important 24,000 level.
