South Korean shares opened sharply higher on Thursday, with the Kospi beginning the session at 6,963.35, up around 2.4 per cent from its previous close of 6,797.70.
The strong opening quickly developed into a broader rally, with the benchmark climbing by more than 3 per cent as investors returned to semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related stocks.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were among the principal drivers. Sentiment towards Asian chipmakers improved after major American technology companies signalled continued heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The advance represented a notable recovery following a volatile period for South Korean equities. Investors have recently questioned whether high valuations can be sustained as spending on AI expands and global interest rates remain elevated.
The market nevertheless opened with clear upward momentum, supported by renewed foreign interest in technology shares.
