Taiwan opened the Taiwan Smart Medical and HealthTech Expo in Geneva on 17 May, using the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly to showcase its medical technology, hospital expertise and contribution to global health resilience.
A strategic Geneva platform
The three-day event was commissioned by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and organised by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council. It coincides with WHA79, which runs from 18 to 23 May in Geneva.
Smart health on display
The expo brings together Taiwanese medical institutions, health technology companies and pharmaceutical groups. Its focus includes smart hospitals, digital health, AI-supported care, medical devices and resilient healthcare systems.
Health diplomacy
Taiwan remains outside the World Health Organization system, but the exhibition is designed to demonstrate that it continues to contribute to international healthcare. Officials have framed the event as both a technology showcase and a statement of medical diplomacy.
Why it matters
The pandemic years showed that health security depends on fast data, resilient supply chains, hospital capacity and cross-border cooperation. Taiwan is positioning itself as a partner in these areas, particularly through smart medical systems and practical healthcare innovation.
A wider message
The Geneva expo is therefore about more than products. It is a reminder that global health resilience depends on including capable partners, even when political disputes complicate formal participation.
Technology and trust
For Taiwan, medical technology has become part of its international identity. By linking innovation, public health and diplomacy, the country is using WHA79 to argue that its expertise should be part of the global health conversation.
