Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Latin American countries and Spain to help repair Ukraine’s electricity network, saying Russian attacks have damaged every power plant in the country to some degree. Speaking at the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid on Thursday, he asked leaders to help Kyiv obtain transformers, cables and generators compatible with its power grid.
Ukraine appeals directly to suppliers
Zelenskyy identified Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia as potential sources of transformers and sought power cables from Chile. He also appealed to Spain for electrical equipment, cables and generators. He asked governments to put Ukrainian officials in direct contact with manufacturers so they could identify suitable equipment and arrange deliveries quickly. “And we need it fast,” he told delegates.
Ukraine’s repair crews are working around the clock to keep the electricity network operating after repeated Russian missile and drone strikes, Zelenskyy said. The attacks have damaged generating facilities and the substations that carry electricity to the wider grid. Ukraine’s energy ministry said on Wednesday that nuclear power plants had reduced output after damage to substations limited the amount of electricity the network could transmit.
Trump predicts a deal that could involve Europe
In Washington, US President Donald Trump said he had met Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, at the White House on Thursday. Trump predicted a “very big” agreement and said it could involve countries beyond Ukraine, potentially extending across Europe. He declined to say what he had discussed with Dmitriev and gave no terms or timetable. Trump said he had not met the Ukrainian officials who were also at the White House that day.
In Madrid, Zelenskyy urged governments to uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and reject recognition of Russian control over occupied Ukrainian territory. He told delegates that accepting a change of borders imposed by force would set a precedent for other countries.
