US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine was close and could have implications for all of Europe. Speaking after a private meeting at the White House with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, Trump gave no details of the proposed terms. No comprehensive agreement was announced.
Washington meeting precedes Abu Dhabi talks
Trump said he met Dmitriev on 5 November but did not meet the Ukrainian delegation that day. Representatives from both countries had attended a separate White House event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump. The event focused on a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, which the White House said enabled the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of nearly 800 people.
The local ceasefire showed that Russia and Ukraine could agree on a specific humanitarian operation. The next round of US-mediated talks between representatives of the two countries is scheduled for 10 and 11 November in Abu Dhabi, where the agenda concerns the wider war.
European security enters the discussion
In Brussels, US officials held separate discussions with Ukraine, NATO and European partners on security guarantees for Kyiv and possible measures to reduce the risk of military escalation across Europe. US envoy Jared Kushner said the discussions covered regular security consultations, reliable channels for communication during crises and greater transparency about military activity.
Kushner said any arrangements would have to respect each country’s sovereignty and its right to choose its own alliances. He added that NATO would remain central to European collective defence. Those remarks outlined Washington’s approach to the discussions, while Trump left open what a broader agreement might cover and which countries might take part.
The Abu Dhabi talks will offer a clearer indication of where Moscow and Kyiv can find common ground. Questions about territory, the terms of any wider ceasefire and how Ukraine’s security would be guaranteed remain open.
