Democratic US Senate candidate James Talarico has launched a sharp attack on billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of attempting to purchase political influence in Texas through massive campaign donations supporting Republican rival Ken Paxton. Speaking before hundreds of supporters at the University of Texas in Austin on Friday, Talarico declared that the state’s political future should be determined by voters rather than wealthy donors.
A billionaire enters the political battlefield
Musk has emerged as a central figure in one of America’s most closely watched Senate races ahead of the 3 November midterm elections.
According to federal campaign finance disclosures, Musk contributed approximately $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, with the money subsequently channelled towards Republican political organisations supporting Paxton.
Talarico accused the technology entrepreneur of attempting to secure a senator personally loyal to his business interests.
The Democrat also criticised Musk’s interests in Texas land, water resources and public funding.
Corruption allegations dominate campaign
Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative and former teacher, described Paxton as deeply compromised by his history of legal and ethical controversies.
Paxton was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives in 2023 over allegations involving abuse of office but was subsequently acquitted by the state Senate.
The Republican candidate has denied wrongdoing and maintains that the accusations against him were politically motivated.
Talarico argued that the election represents a choice between political accountability and the influence of exceptionally wealthy donors.
Grassroots funding challenges billionaire support
The Democratic campaign has reported substantial grassroots financial support, raising approximately $64 million between July and September.
According to campaign disclosures, 97% of contributions were below $100.
Talarico has highlighted the contrast between his extensive network of individual contributors and the large donations supporting Republican political organisations.
However, Paxton and his supporters maintain that the Democrat’s policies are out of step with Texas voters.
Texas becomes a national battleground
Republicans have dominated statewide elections in Texas for more than three decades.
Nevertheless, recent polling suggests an unusually competitive contest, with one survey placing Talarico narrowly ahead of Paxton by 48% to 46%.
The outcome could have significant consequences for control of the US Senate and President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda.
Money and democracy take centre stage
The dispute reflects broader concerns about the role of billionaire political donors in American elections.
Musk’s financial support for Republican candidates has made him an increasingly influential participant in national politics.
For Talarico, challenging that influence has become a defining feature of his campaign.
With early voting under way, the election will test whether extensive political spending or grassroots mobilisation proves more effective in determining Texas’s next senator.
