Asian markets start Tuesday higher as technology shares support sentiment
Asian stock markets traded mostly higher in early trading on Tuesday, 6 October, following gains in US technology shares overnight. Japan and Australia advanced, while South Korea recovered from an initially weaker opening. Investors weighed renewed demand for technology companies against elevated bond yields and uncertainty over energy supplies.
Japan leads early gains
Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained around 0.4% in early trading, supported by electronics and financial stocks. Semiconductor testing equipment maker Advantest rose 2%, while Hitachi added 1.3%. Tokio Marine and Japan Post Bank also advanced as lower overnight oil prices eased concerns about energy costs.
South Korea’s Kospi initially fell 0.15% before recovering to trade approximately 0.2% higher during the opening hour. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained around 0.5%, extending the broadly positive regional tone. The movements represented early trading levels, with the session still under way.
US technology rally lifts confidence
Asian investors took encouragement from Wall Street, where the Nasdaq Composite reached a record closing high on Monday. Demand for companies linked to artificial intelligence supported the advance, while weaker-than-expected US employment figures reduced expectations of an immediate Federal Reserve interest-rate increase.
However, US government bond yields remained elevated. This left investors balancing stronger appetite for equities against the potential impact of higher financing costs. Rising yields can put pressure on company valuations, particularly where share prices depend heavily on expectations of future earnings.
Energy prices remain in focus
Brent crude traded near $100 a barrel following an overnight decline, while West Texas Intermediate hovered around $89. The easing in oil prices offered some relief to Asian economies dependent on imported energy, although developments in the Middle East continued to influence the outlook.
Mainland Chinese stock exchanges remained closed for the National Day holiday, with trading scheduled to resume on 8 October. Holiday tourism and retail figures were being watched for indications of consumer demand.
In India, GIFT Nifty rose approximately 0.4% ahead of regular trading, signalling a potentially firmer opening. Across the region, technology demand supported sentiment, while oil prices, currency movements and borrowing costs remained key factors for the session.
