Money just got more expensive — and emerging markets could feel it first

Money just got more expensive — and emerging markets could feel it first

Rising US Treasury yields, oil above $100 and a strong dollar are increasing the cost of finance worldwide. For emerging economies dependent on imported energy and foreign capital, the combination could put pressure on currencies, investment and government finances.
The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5.27%, its highest level in 19 years, while the two-year yield approached 5%. Brent crude traded around $107 a barrel as tensions surrounding Iran continued to cloud the outlook for Middle Eastern energy supplies.
These developments are closely connected. Expensive energy adds to inflationary pressure, making it harder for central banks to lower interest rates. Higher bond yields then feed into borrowing costs for governments, companies and households.
Emerging economies face several pressures
Higher returns on US government debt increase competition for international investment. Investors can become less willing to finance emerging-market projects unless offered higher returns to compensate for additional risk.
For countries borrowing in dollars, a weakening domestic currency compounds the problem. Repaying foreign debt becomes more expensive, while imported fuel and equipment cost more in local money.
India illustrates how quickly these pressures can emerge. The rupee opened beyond 96 to the dollar on Tuesday, weighed down by higher oil prices and rising US yields.
Similar vulnerabilities exist across Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, the effects are uneven: oil exporters may gain additional revenue, while energy importers face larger bills.
Investment decisions become harder
More expensive finance can delay infrastructure construction, discourage business expansion and increase the share of government revenue absorbed by debt repayments.
Households can also feel the consequences through tighter credit conditions, higher transport costs and more expensive everyday goods.
The duration of this pressure remains uncertain. Bond yields could retreat if inflation eases, growth slows or energy supplies stabilise. A permanent end to cheap money cannot be established from the latest market movements alone.
Local financing becomes more important
The changing environment strengthens the case for deeper domestic capital markets and more borrowing in local currencies.
Mobilising local savings could help countries reduce their exposure to shifts in international investment. More efficient digital payment systems could support that process by lowering transaction costs and widening access to formal finance.
Such changes take time and require credible institutions, effective regulation and investor confidence. For emerging economies, the immediate challenge is to sustain investment and essential spending while the cost of international capital rises.
