Investment in Latin American financial technology companies reached $1.05 billion during the second quarter of 2026, representing a 2.6-fold increase from the same period last year and signalling renewed institutional interest in the region’s digital finance sector.
Funding reaches five-quarter high
The total was the highest recorded across the latest five-quarter period and compared with $398.1 million raised during the second quarter of 2025.
Investment also increased by 82 per cent from the first quarter of 2026, when Latin American fintech companies secured $575.3 million.
However, the number of completed transactions remained almost unchanged. Twenty-five deals were recorded during the quarter, the joint-lowest level across the five-quarter period. The figures indicate that investors are writing considerably larger cheques for selected companies rather than financing a broader range of start-ups.
Large deals dominate the results
The two largest transactions accounted for $905 million, representing approximately 86 per cent of all fintech capital raised during the quarter.
Excluding those investments, the remaining 23 companies secured only around $145 million between them. This concentration suggests that established fintech businesses with significant customer bases, regulated operations and proven revenue are attracting most of the available capital.
The average transaction value reached $41.8 million, up from $15.9 million one year earlier and $22.1 million during the first quarter. While this appears to show increasing confidence, the figure is heavily influenced by the quarter’s largest transactions.
Plata leads investment activity
Mexican digital bank Plata completed a $405 million Series C financing round at a valuation of $5 billion, making it one of the quarter’s largest Latin American fintech investments.
Bicycle Capital led the round, with participation from Qatar Investment Authority, Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual and Valor Capital Group. Existing investors Kora, Hedosophia, Spice Expeditions and Audeo Ventures also participated.
Morgan Stanley acted as the exclusive placement agent.
The financing followed Plata’s launch of full banking operations as Banco Plata in Mexico in March. The company has expanded beyond credit cards to offer customer deposits and debit services, providing a more stable source of funding for its lending operations.
Rapid expansion in Mexico
Plata has accumulated more than 3.5 million active credit-card customers in approximately three years. More than 750,000 users received their first credit card through the platform, highlighting the demand for accessible financial services among consumers who have traditionally been underserved by established banks.
The company has exceeded $600 million in annualised revenue and built an $800 million loan portfolio. Its proprietary artificial intelligence models are used to assess customers and manage credit risk.
Plata also received regulatory authorisation in 2025 to establish a financial company in Colombia, supporting its longer-term ambition to expand across Latin America.
Investors demand greater maturity
The latest funding figures suggest that confidence is returning to Latin American fintech after several years in which higher interest rates and reduced venture capital forced companies to cut costs and prioritise profitability.
Investors now appear more willing to finance businesses that combine technological growth with banking licences, strong revenues and measurable customer activity.
This shift may benefit larger digital banks and payments companies while making fundraising more difficult for early-stage businesses without proven commercial models.
The quarter therefore presents a mixed picture. Latin America has again demonstrated that it can attract major international fintech investment, but the recovery has not yet reached the entire market.
For the sector to achieve broader momentum, capital will need to spread beyond a small number of highly valued companies and reach the payment, lending and financial-infrastructure businesses still developing their platforms.
