Hong Kong shares opened higher on Monday as investors responded to an improving domestic economic outlook, stronger trade figures and continued interest in technology companies. The Hang Seng Index began the session at 25,987.31 points, approximately 0.4% above Friday’s close of 25,884.43.
The benchmark briefly advanced above 26,100 points before giving back part of its initial gain. During early trading, the Hang Seng was around 56 points, or 0.2%, higher at 25,940, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained approximately 0.7% to trade near 4,861.
The positive opening placed Hong Kong among the stronger Asian markets during a mixed regional session. South Korean shares fell sharply, while Japanese equities were pressured by a stronger yen following coordinated currency intervention by Japan and the United States.
Economic data supports confidence
Investors were encouraged by indications that the Hong Kong government will raise its economic growth forecast for 2026. The economy expanded by 5.1% during the first half of the year compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
Gross domestic product increased by 4.3% year on year during the second quarter. Total exports of goods jumped by 28.8%, while private consumption expenditure advanced by 2.9%.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan said the revised full-year forecast would be released during August. Hong Kong’s economy has now recorded growth for 14 consecutive quarters, supported by external trade, business services and improving domestic demand.
Demand for artificial intelligence products has contributed to stronger merchandise exports. Increased visitor arrivals have also supported retail activity, hospitality and other consumer-facing industries.
July rally creates a cautious background
Monday’s advance followed an exceptionally strong July for Hong Kong equities. The Hang Seng gained approximately 3,000 points during the month, representing an increase of around 13% and its strongest monthly performance in almost two years.
Average daily turnover remained above HK$300bn for a second consecutive month, indicating that the rally was accompanied by significant trading activity rather than narrow speculative buying.
Hong Kong’s initial public offering market has also strengthened. Funds raised during the first seven months of 2026 exceeded the total recorded during the whole of 2025 by approximately 13%, with technology companies accounting for a growing share of new listings.
The exchange also launched five-year Chinese government bond futures on Monday. The contract is intended to provide international investors with an offshore instrument for managing interest-rate exposure connected to Chinese government bonds.
Investors watch for profit-taking
Despite the constructive opening, the Hang Seng’s rapid July rise creates the possibility of short-term profit-taking. Investors are also monitoring Chinese economic data, American interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments affecting global trade.
The decline in international oil prices provided some support to sentiment by reducing concerns about inflation and energy costs. However, the divergence between Hong Kong’s modest advance and South Korea’s sharp decline demonstrated that Asian markets remain highly sensitive to individual sectors and recent trading momentum.
Hong Kong nevertheless began August from a considerably stronger position, supported by improving growth expectations, active capital markets and renewed investor demand for Chinese and Hong Kong equities.
