Hindustan Unilever has reported its strongest sales growth in more than three years, but falling profit and shrinking margins reveal how inflation is placing renewed pressure on India’s consumer economy. The company has warned that further price increases may be necessary as commodity, energy and transport costs continue to rise.
Sales grow as prices rise
Hindustan Unilever, one of India’s largest consumer goods companies, recorded turnover of ₹171.84bn during the quarter ending 30 June, an increase of 10% from the previous year.
The performance represented the company’s highest underlying sales growth in 13 quarters. However, the increase was divided equally between higher volumes and higher prices. Underlying volumes grew by 5%, while price increases contributed another 5%.
The results therefore show that improving demand was only partly responsible for the rise in revenue. Indian households are also paying more for everyday products ranging from soap and shampoo to detergent, tea and packaged food.
Hindustan Unilever’s standalone net profit fell by 4% to ₹26.31bn. Reported consolidated profit after tax declined by 2% to ₹26.80bn, although profit before exceptional items increased by 9%.
The company’s standalone operating margin contracted by 40 basis points to 22.8%, reflecting higher raw-material and operating expenses. Shares fell by almost 7% following the announcement as investors focused on the pressure on profitability.
Commodity costs reach consumers
Hindustan Unilever depends heavily on palm oil, crude-oil derivatives and other commodities used in soaps, detergents, packaging and personal care products.
Palm oil inflation has persisted for a second consecutive year, while conflict in the Middle East has increased energy, freight and commodity costs. Supply-chain disruption and more expensive imports have added further pressure.
The company said it absorbed approximately half of the inflation it experienced during the June quarter. Management has now signalled that additional selective price increases may be required, with sequential cost inflation expected to remain between 2% and 5%.
The challenge is balancing higher prices against the risk of damaging demand. Consumers with limited disposable income may respond by purchasing smaller quantities, switching to cheaper brands or delaying non-essential spending.
In parts of the mass-market soap business, Hindustan Unilever reduced the weight of products rather than increasing familiar retail prices. This allowed key price points to be maintained but meant consumers received less product for the same amount of money.
A wider economic warning
The company’s results are closely watched because its products reach millions of Indian households across income groups and geographical regions.
Demand remained broadly stable in both urban and rural markets. Rural consumption, which had previously recovered more quickly, is now growing at approximately the same rate as urban demand.
Home care performed strongly, with underlying sales increasing by 14%, while beauty and wellbeing grew by 12%. Foods recorded 7% growth. Personal care expanded by only 4%, largely through pricing, as inflation weakened demand for mass-market soaps.
India’s consumer price inflation increased to 4.38% in June, up from 3.93% in May and above the Reserve Bank of India’s medium-term target of 4%. Food, fuel and other essential costs continue to consume a significant share of household income.
Hindustan Unilever’s quarter consequently presents two versions of the Indian economy. One shows resilient demand, rising sales and continued growth in premium products. The other shows strained margins, cautious lower-income consumers and companies preparing further price increases.
The decisive question is whether wage growth and rural income can keep pace. If they cannot, India’s consumer companies may find that passing inflation to customers protects margins only by weakening the demand on which their long-term growth depends.
