Hong Kong shares opened slightly higher on Monday as signs of easing tensions between the United States and Iran encouraged a cautious return to riskier assets.
The Hang Seng Index added 30 points, or 0.1 per cent, to open at 24,993. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 0.16 per cent to 8,284, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 0.4 per cent to 4,647.
Oil prices provide relief
Investor sentiment improved after Washington paused its attacks on Iran and Tehran halted retaliatory action. Discussions involving Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz also raised hopes that further disruption to global energy supplies could be avoided.
Oil prices fell sharply, easing concerns that higher energy costs could intensify inflation and force central banks to maintain tighter monetary policies.
The positive opening remained restrained, however, as investors prepared for a busy week of major corporate earnings, economic figures and central-bank decisions.
