Singapore opens cautiously before blue chips lift the market

OpenAI opens Singapore lab as AI governance framework advances

Singapore equities began Wednesday’s session on a restrained note, with the Straits Times Index opening at approximately 5,521.26 points after closing at 5,526.72 on Tuesday. The benchmark initially moved lower before recovering, reflecting a balance between optimism over Wall Street’s advance and concern about rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty.

Early decline gives way to recovery
The STI fell as low as approximately 5,483 points during the morning before reversing direction. By late morning, it had climbed above 5,540, representing a gain of around 0.25 per cent from the previous close.

The movement illustrated Singapore’s comparatively defensive market structure. While technology-driven exchanges experienced much larger swings, the STI’s concentration in banks, property companies, transport groups and industrial businesses produced a more measured response.

The recovery was helped by strength in several prominent blue-chip companies. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding was among the leading performers, while SATS, Seatrium, Venture Corporation and Sembcorp Industries also gained.

Banks provide important support
DBS advanced during the morning and contributed to the index’s improvement. Singapore’s three major banks remain crucial to the STI because of their large market weight and their influence on domestic investor sentiment.

The financial sector continues to benefit from relatively high interest rates, which can support lending margins. However, investors are also examining whether slower regional growth, changing monetary policy and higher business costs could affect credit demand and asset quality.

Singapore’s role as a financial centre means its banks are exposed not only to domestic conditions but also to economic activity across South-East Asia, China and other international markets.

Airline and property shares face pressure
Not all sectors participated in the rebound. Singapore Airlines declined as rising fuel prices created concern over operating costs. Wilmar International and several property and real estate investment trust counters also traded lower.

Brent crude remained above $90 a barrel as continued instability in the Middle East raised fears of disrupted shipping and energy supplies. Higher fuel prices can place direct pressure on airlines and transport companies while also contributing to broader inflation.

Property-related assets remained sensitive to bond yields and expectations for global interest rates. Persistent inflation could delay monetary easing and reduce the relative attraction of income-producing property trusts.

Defensive qualities remain attractive
Singapore’s opening took place against a broadly firmer Asian background, led by a dramatic semiconductor recovery in South Korea and gains in Japan. Hong Kong, however, moved lower as weakness among technology shares persisted.

The STI has recorded strong gains over the past year, leaving some investors alert to the possibility of profit-taking near recent highs. Nevertheless, its combination of profitable banks, dividend-paying companies and established industrial groups continues to attract capital during uncertain periods.

Wednesday’s cautious opening and subsequent recovery suggested that investors remained willing to buy established Singapore companies on weakness, even as energy prices and geopolitical risks limited enthusiasm.
