Every rainfall brings fear as Lagos braces for another flood season

For millions of residents in Lagos, the arrival of the rainy season no longer signals relief from the heat. Instead, it brings anxiety, uncertainty and the prospect of once again rebuilding homes, businesses and livelihoods after devastating floods. As Nigeria enters another period of heavy rainfall, many communities remain trapped in a cycle of repeated destruction that is taking an increasing emotional as well as financial toll.

A city living with constant risk
Lagos, Africa’s largest city with a population estimated at more than 20 million, has long struggled with seasonal flooding. Rapid urbanisation, inadequate drainage systems, unplanned construction and rising sea levels have combined to make many neighbourhoods increasingly vulnerable.

Heavy downpours frequently overwhelm drainage channels, leaving roads submerged, homes inundated and businesses forced to close. For families living in low-lying districts, flooding has become an expected part of life rather than an exceptional event.

Residents describe preparing emergency bags, moving furniture onto higher surfaces and constantly monitoring weather forecasts whenever dark clouds gather.

The hidden psychological burden
While the economic damage caused by flooding is well documented, many Lagos residents say the emotional consequences receive far less attention.

Families who have already lost possessions several times speak of constant stress whenever rain begins to fall. Parents worry about keeping children safe, business owners fear losing their stock overnight, and homeowners face the exhausting reality of repairing damaged property year after year.

Mental health specialists note that repeated exposure to disasters can lead to chronic anxiety, depression and long-term psychological trauma, particularly when communities feel they have little control over future risks.

Economic losses continue to mount
Flooding affects nearly every sector of Lagos’ economy. Roads become impassable, delaying commuters and disrupting supply chains. Small businesses often suffer severe losses when inventory is destroyed, while informal workers may lose several days of income during prolonged flooding.

Insurance coverage remains limited for many households, meaning recovery costs are largely borne by families themselves. For lower-income communities, replacing furniture, electrical equipment or construction materials can consume years of savings.

The repeated financial setbacks also make it more difficult for families to invest in education, healthcare or business expansion, reinforcing cycles of poverty.

Climate change increases the challenge
Scientists warn that climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense rainfall events across parts of West Africa. Combined with rising Atlantic sea levels, Lagos faces increasing pressure on infrastructure originally designed for a much smaller population.

Authorities have invested in drainage improvements, flood management projects and public awareness campaigns, while emergency agencies continue to monitor high-risk areas throughout the rainy season. However, experts argue that long-term resilience will require sustained investment in urban planning, drainage expansion, waste management and climate adaptation.

Many environmental specialists also stress the importance of protecting wetlands, improving flood forecasting and preventing further construction on natural flood plains.

Building resilience for the future
Despite the challenges, communities across Lagos continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience. Neighbours frequently assist one another during evacuations, volunteers help clear blocked drainage channels and local organisations provide emergency support following severe flooding.

Yet residents increasingly argue that resilience alone cannot replace comprehensive planning. As another rainy season unfolds, many believe lasting solutions will depend on coordinated investment that addresses both immediate flood protection and the longer-term realities of climate change.

For countless Lagos families, every rainfall remains more than a weather event. It is a reminder of losses already endured—and a question of whether this time their homes, businesses and futures will once again survive.
