Former US President Joe Biden has launched one of his strongest public attacks on successor Donald Trump, accusing him of damaging America’s international reputation and describing him as “a loser” during a speech to Democratic supporters in Maryland. The remarks marked Biden’s sharpest criticism of Trump since leaving the White House and reflected the increasingly combative political atmosphere ahead of November’s midterm elections.
A blistering attack
Speaking at a Democratic Party gala in Hanover, Maryland, Biden argued that Trump’s leadership had weakened the United States both domestically and abroad.
“He’s diminished our standing in the world more than any president in history has,” Biden said, claiming the administration had undermined long-standing alliances and America’s international credibility. He also criticised Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and accused the administration of deliberately weakening the North Atlantic Treaty Organization alliance.
Criticism of Washington makeover
Much of Biden’s speech focused on what he described as Trump’s “vanity projects” in Washington. He criticised the demolition of the White House East Wing to make room for a ballroom, attempts to place Trump’s name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, proposals for a triumphal arch and the controversial renovation of the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial.
After listing the projects, Biden paused before declaring: “What a loser.”
He argued that the construction projects reflected not only personal ambition but also what he characterised as widespread corruption within the administration.
Democrats seek momentum
The speech formed part of a broader Democratic effort to regain control of Congress in this year’s midterm elections. Biden’s appearance came exactly two years after the presidential debate that ultimately led him to withdraw from the 2024 election campaign and endorse former Vice-President Kamala Harris, who was later defeated by Trump.
Although Biden has maintained a relatively low public profile since leaving office, his remarks suggest he intends to remain an active voice within the Democratic Party as Republicans defend their congressional majorities.
Political divide deepens
The latest exchange illustrates how personal the rivalry between Biden and Trump has become. Rather than limiting his criticism to policy disagreements, Biden directly questioned Trump’s competence, integrity and motives while arguing that the United States has lost influence on the global stage.
The White House did not immediately respond to Biden’s comments. With the midterm campaign gathering momentum, observers expect increasingly direct confrontations between leading figures from both parties as they seek to shape the political narrative ahead of November’s vote.
