Vietnam proposes $760 million expansion for Buon Ma Thuot Airport

Vietnam has unveiled plans for a major expansion of Buon Ma Thuot Airport, with proposed investment reaching approximately $760 million as authorities seek to strengthen regional infrastructure, support economic growth and expand aviation capacity in the country’s Central Highlands region. The long-term development plan forms part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to modernise transportation networks and improve domestic and international connectivity.

Under the proposal, Buon Ma Thuot Airport is expected to undergo a significant transformation over the coming decades, with long-range planning extending toward 2050.

Authorities envision the airport eventually expanding to 27 aircraft parking positions while increasing annual passenger handling capacity to approximately 7 million travellers. Cargo capacity is also projected to rise substantially, reaching around 15,000 tonnes annually under the proposed development framework.

The project reflects Vietnam’s accelerating infrastructure ambitions as the country experiences rising tourism demand, industrial expansion and increasing regional mobility.

Strategic importance for the Central Highlands

Buon Ma Thuot serves as a key transportation hub for Dak Lak Province and the wider Central Highlands region, an area known for agriculture, coffee production and growing tourism potential.

Government planners believe expanded airport capacity could help stimulate economic activity by improving access for domestic businesses, investors and international visitors.

Vietnam has experienced strong growth in passenger aviation over the past decade, with increasing middle-class incomes and regional economic integration driving demand for air travel.

Officials also view upgraded transportation infrastructure as essential for supporting industrial development, trade logistics and tourism expansion across secondary cities and emerging regional centres.

Infrastructure expansion accelerates

The proposed airport development aligns with broader national investment plans focused on roads, ports, railways and aviation infrastructure.

Vietnam has prioritised transportation modernisation as part of its long-term economic strategy, aiming to strengthen competitiveness and support continued export-led growth.

Several airports across the country are already undergoing expansion or redevelopment projects as passenger volumes continue to increase following post-pandemic recovery trends.

Analysts noted that improving regional connectivity could play an increasingly important role in attracting foreign direct investment into provinces outside Vietnam’s largest metropolitan centres.

Tourism and cargo growth expected

The expansion plan also reflects expectations of rising tourism demand in the Central Highlands, where eco-tourism, cultural tourism and domestic travel are gaining popularity.

Improved cargo handling capabilities are expected to support agricultural exports and regional supply chain development, particularly for coffee and other commodities produced in Dak Lak Province.

Vietnam’s aviation sector has become one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing markets in recent years, supported by strong economic growth and increasing integration into global manufacturing and trade networks.

While financing structures and implementation timelines remain under discussion, the scale of the proposed Buon Ma Thuot Airport expansion signals Vietnam’s continued commitment to large-scale infrastructure investment as a foundation for long-term economic development.
