What the Dickens? A sort of brandy mule or hot toddy with a blast of honey beer and lemon – the only way to describe it is if you try it
Our wine bar Plume in Covent Garden is housed in the very building where Charles Dickens had his offices for his All the Year Round magazine and his private apartment from 1859 to 1870, so we like to make nods to the man himself, from the blue plaque above the door to some of the drinks we serve. Mead dates back between 20,000 and 40,000 years, but it was heavily referenced in Dickens’ novels, and this cocktail is our way of saying “cheers!” to the great author.
Fallen leaf
Serves 1
20ml cognac – we use Courvoisier
30ml mead – we use Jack Ratt from Devon
20ml lemon juice
20ml sugar syrup
1 lemon slice, to garnish
Pour all the liquids into a shaker, add six to eight ice cubes and shake for 10 to 15 seconds. Pour the lot, ice and all, into a rocks glass, pop in the slice of lemon and serve.
