Wreckage belonging to the missing submarine Titan has been found near the wreck of the Titanic, the US Coast Guard confirmed at a press briefing. The company OceanGate, which owns the submarine, says the five passengers on board are presumed dead.
At a press briefing, the Coast Guard confirmed that the stern of the Titan was found within 500 metres of the Titanic.
“The U.S. Coast Guard concludes from the wreckage that the submarine has imploded,” Admiral John Mauger said at a press briefing.
“Upon this discovery, we immediately notified the families,” he said.
Continuing the search
It is too early to say when the Titan imploded, Mr Mauger says, but adds that in the three days that they have had search equipment in the water, they have not picked up any evidence of such an event.
He also thanks everyone who helped in what he calls a very complex search operation. Furthermore, he says that the underwater robots will continue to search the site to get more information about the events of the accident.
Loss of contact on Sunday
It was on Sunday that the underwater vehicle operated by Oceangate expeditions started its tourist journey towards the wreck of the Titanic, which is located at a depth of 3 800 metres.
Contact with the support vessel was lost after 1 hour and 45 minutes. Search operations were launched later that day and have intensified each day.
The search vessels have been working in an area five times the size of Lake Vänern.
On board are the CEO of the submarine company, a French explorer, a British billionaire and a father and son from one of Pakistan’s richest families.
