Spain begins national mourning as death toll from devastating train crash reaches 68

Spain begins national mourning as death toll from devastating train crash reaches 68

Spain has begun three days of national mourning following a catastrophic collision between two high-speed trains that killed at least 68 people and injured dozens more. Emergency workers continued searching the wreckage overnight, while authorities established special centres to help families identify victims through DNA testing.

A nation united in grief
The disaster occurred on Wednesday, 28 October, near Urda in the province of Toledo, approximately 130 kilometres south of Madrid.

A high-speed train operated by Spain’s state-owned Renfe collided with the rear of a stationary train operated by private railway company Iryo on the Madrid–Seville route.

More than 500 passengers were travelling aboard the two trains when the collision occurred, leaving several carriages derailed and severely damaged.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of national mourning, beginning on Thursday, 29 October. Flags will fly at half-mast on public buildings until the end of Saturday.

Desperate search for victims continues
Rescue workers, firefighters and Civil Guard officers worked through the night searching damaged carriages and recovering victims.

Authorities established identification centres in Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba and Seville, where relatives of missing passengers can provide DNA samples and personal information.

Specialist forensic teams are coordinating the identification process, while psychologists and social workers are supporting grieving families.

Hospitals throughout the region have treated injured passengers, and emergency blood donation services have been mobilised.

Questions emerge over railway safety
Transport Minister Óscar Puente acknowledged that a malfunction had disrupted an automatic railway safety system before the collision.

According to preliminary accounts, the control centre subsequently authorised the Renfe train to continue despite another train remaining stationary ahead.

Investigators are examining signalling records, operational decisions and the circumstances surrounding the system failure.

However, the precise sequence of events and responsibility for the disaster have yet to be established.

Second major rail disaster raises concerns
The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of Spain’s high-speed railway network, following another deadly collision in January that claimed 46 lives.

The latest accident has intensified questions about infrastructure maintenance, signalling reliability and the management of an increasingly busy railway system.

Spain operates one of Europe’s largest high-speed rail networks, connecting major cities and serving millions of passengers annually.

As rescue and identification operations continue, the government faces growing pressure to explain how such a catastrophic collision could occur.

For grieving families, however, the immediate priority remains finding loved ones and obtaining answers.
